Velma Maia Thomas is a public historian and the author of six books on popular African American history.She has earned degrees from Howard University and Emory University, and she has a master's level certificate in Heritage Preservation from Georgia State University. She has also received award recognition from organizations like the American Library Association for her research. Thomas is currently the historian at New South Associates, a cultural resource management service. She lives in Georgia.
