Adam Lashinsky is the author of “Inside Apple: How America’s Most Admired — and Secretive — Company Really Works,” a book published last month. While Walter Isaacson’s recent best-seller “Steve Jobs” focused on Apple’s late co-founder and former chief executive, Mr. Lashinsky’s book is about the company’s maniacal emphasis on secrecy, its management practices and other pieces of the blueprint that make Apple successful. The following are excerpts of a conversation with Mr. Lashinsky, who is also a senior editor at large with Fortune magazine:
Q. Who is the reader you’re targeting with your book?
A. One is an executive at a really big company who wants to understand how to innovate at scale because nobody does it well, and Apple does it better than anybody. No. 2, entrepreneurs. Apple behaves in an incredibly entrepreneurial way. No. 3, anybody in their career. I had epiphanies working on the book when I realized how focused Apple people are and that they don’t multitask. I’m the ultimate multitasker and most modern business professionals are.
