Sue Johnson

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Sue Johnson is a recognized leader in the new science of relationships. Dr. Johnson is the author of numerous books and articles, the developer of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, and has trained thousands of therapists in North America and around the world.

Developed over 20 years ago and practiced all over the world, Emotionally Focused Therapy has been heralded by TIME Magazine and The New York Times as one of the only forms of couple therapy to actually work. Couples who practice EFT see a 75% success rate (compared to 35% for other forms of relationship therapy).

Johnson’s book, Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love, introduces EFT to the general public for the first time and illustrates a program they can use in their own relationships. Johnson teaches that the way to save and enrich a relationship is by de-escalating conflict, creating a safe emotional connection, and strengthening bonds between partners.

The message of EFT is simple: Forget about learning how to argue better, analyzing your early childhood, making grand romantic gestures, or experimenting with new sexual positions. Instead, recognize and admit that you are emotionally attached to and dependent on your partner in much the same way that a child is on a parent for nurturing, soothing, and protection. EFT focuses on creating and strengthening this emotional bond by identifying and transforming the key moments that foster an adult loving relationship.

At the podium, Johnson walks audiences through seven conversations that capture the defining moments in a love relationship and instructs how to shape these moments to create a secure and lasting bond. Using case histories and exercises in each conversation, Johnson brings the lessons of EFT to life.

She has received numerous honors for her work, including the Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Couple and Family Therapy Award from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the Research in Family Therapy Award from the American Family Therapy Academy. She is an invited Fellow of the American Psychological Association.

Among the other books she has authored are The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connection and Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy with Trauma Survivors.

Johnson is Director of the Ottawa (Canada) Couple and Family Institute and the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy and Distinguished Research Professor at Alliant University in San Diego, California as well as Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa, Canada. She trains counselors in EFT worldwide and consults to Veterans Affairs, the U.S. and Canadian military and New York City Fire Department.

Johnson lives in Ottawa with her husband, two children and dog.
