Pat Williams

Senior Vice President, Orlando Magic & Author

Named one of the 50 Most Influential People in the NBA, Orlando Magic Senior Vice President Pat Williams helped build the Orlando Magic from the ground up. Williams' book, Extreme Dreams Depend on Teams, gives inspiring personal accounts of the power of teamwork. Leadership guru Patrick Lencioni calls the book "the most comprehensive and interesting collection of wisdom on teamwork I have ever read."

In Extreme Dreams Depend on Teams, Williams points out that extreme dreams are only fulfilled when teams are led with characteristics such as respect, empowerment, commitment, trust and passion. "Once you put teamwork into practice in your organization, these principles will begin transforming everything. They will transform how you view the world, including our society and its problems, and the political and environmental issues we face. You'll begin seeing the world through a lens of extreme dreams, extreme possibilities and the power of teamwork," says Williams.

Williams has been an integral part of NBA history, including bringing the NBA to Orlando. He is responsible for trading and drafting some of the NBA's most well known players, including Pete Maravich, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Penny Hardaway, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal, Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney, Darryl Dawkins, Billy Cunningham, Chuck Daly and Matt Guokas. Nineteen of his former players have become NBA head coaches, seven have become assistant NBA coaches and nine have become college head coaches.

Pat teaches an adult Sunday school class at First Baptist Church of Orlando and hosts three weekly radio shows. In the last 13 years, he has completed 50 marathons - including the Boston Marathon 12 times - and also climbed Mt. Rainier. He is a weightlifter, Civil War buff and serious baseball fan.

Pat was raised in Wilmington, Delaware, earned his bachelor's degree at Wake Forest University and his master's degree at Indiana University. He is a member of the Wake Forest and Delaware Sports Halls of Fame.

At the podium, Pat explores how to foster teamwork in an organization and how to create new leaders, as he did with many players who went on to major coaching positions. He also discusses the philosophy of leadership, asking if leaders are born or made, and what factors drive the kind of teamwork that leads to fulfilled dreams?
