Mawi Asgedom

The Remarkable Journey from a Refugee Camp to Harvard and Beyond

The desert, I remember. The shrieking hyenas, I remember....I remember playing soccer with rocks, and a strange man telling me and my brother Tewolde that we had to go on a trip and Tewolde refusing to go. The man took out a piece of gum and Tewolde happily traded it for his homeland....

So begins the remarkable true story of a young boy's journey from civil war in east Africa to a refugee camp in Sudan, to a childhood on welfare in an affluent American suburb, and eventually to a full-tuition scholarship at Harvard University. Following his father's advice to "treat all people - even the most unsightly beetles - as though they were angels sent from heaven," Mawi overcame the challenges of language barriers, cultural differences, racial prejudice, and financial disadvantage to build a fulfilling, successful life for himself in his new home.

Today, Mawi is an activist and educator who's inspired millions with his incredible story of survival, compassion, and strength - and his practical, hands-on techniques for improving student performance and wellbeing. With his company Mawi Learning, Mawi has developed, tested, and implemented programs to stimulate leadership, boost GPAs, and build character. As Harvard Magazine put it, “Asgedom has taken the disparate things life has given him up to now, bound them together to make them whole, and transformed them into something for the nourishment and use of others.”

Mawi has spoken at over 1,000 events in 40 states - addressing more than a million audience members in total. He will uplift your audience, equip them with proven leadership and success principles, and energize them to achieve at new levels.
